FESTIVAL: Nine-year-old Leona James will be one of many at the Diwali event.
Ballarat’s annual Diwali festival will be held this weekend.
The event, known as The Festival of the Lights, will includemulticultural food stalls, henna painting, cultural performances and a display of Indian art and culture and is expected to draw a big crowd.
In 2014 the event drew 600 people to the Mercure Hotel.
Ballarat MP Catherine King urged the broader community to attend the event and participate in the wide range of activities which will be on show.
“I congratulate the Ballarat Indian Association and the wider Indian community on the way ithas developed the festival into one of our established annual events in the city,” shesaid.
“Historically Ballarat has always had a rich population diversity and it is great to see how thevarious groups retain pride in their ethnicities while assimilating so well into the overallcommunity.”
The event will beheld this Saturdayat the Mercure Ballarat on Main Road from 12-9pm.
