AraratRural City Council lead the push to form a ‘Western Highway and surrounds’ group of councils to participate in the 2015 Garage Sale Trail.
Fivecouncilsagreed to participate including Ararat Rural City, Northern Grampians, Yarriambiack, West Wimmeraand Horsham.
Each council hasstill been able to organise and host their individual town events in their own way.
Council decided to establish the group so there would be a reduction in participatory costs.
Many councils had balked at participating based on subscription fees.
In 2014, council paid a half-price late-joining fee of $1650 for participation in 2014 and 2015.
Ararat individuals, community groups, schools, charities and private sector participants have registered online, to have a sale.
Councillor Glenda McLean saidcommunity groups have beeninvited to provide a service to the elderly and/or low-income households to bring goods to a central point to sell.
“The direction we are heading in with regard to the Garage Sale Trail is excellent and even though it was a bit of a fizzer because we were on board late the first time round, it will be terrific for Ararat,” she said.
“A few councillors wereinterested in the social benefits of combining it with the service clubs.
“Whilst it has beenslow to getup and running I really encourage everyone to support theGarage Sale Trail.”
Now in its fifth year, the not-for-profit event was co-founded by two individuals who work with government, media and commercial partners across Australia.
They aim to create positive social and environmental change through reuse and education; reducing waste to landfill, facilitating neighbourly connections and providing a platform for fundraising, creativity and stimulating local economies.
Garage Sale Trail, as the lead agency liaises with council in providing access to digital media (website for sale registration, maps, sale locations, item values, report mechanisms, inventory databases and advertising).
