SELLERS across the region are gearing up for one of the biggest garage sale events of the year.
The fifth annual Garage Sale Trail is on Saturday.
The event encourages Australianhouseholds, communitygroups, schools andbusinessesto sell off their unwanted items instead of throwing them in the tip and generating landfill.
More than 7900 sales have been listed across the country including 900 across Victoria.
More than 150 councils are involved in the national project.
Yarriambiack Shire Council has organised sales to take place at Hopetoun, Warracknabeal, Rupanyup and Murtoa transfer stations.
Mayor Andrew McLean said the municipality was set for a busy day of trading.
“It’s great to see the resale sheds full of items for this year’s Garage Sale Trail,” he said.
“While it’s set to be a fun-filled day, it’s also an opportunity to reconsider what we think of as waste.”
Yarriambiack Shire Council’s Infrastructure Services Manager Bernie Naylor said the event was a good way to promote the shire’s resale sheds.
“The resale sheds wereconstructed to reduce waste from entering landfill and to promote the use of unwanted products andmaterials,” he said.
“The sheds are a reasonably new initiative for YarriambiackShire Council and officers will continue to promote this service to the local community and visitors.”
The sheds were funded by the Local Government Infrastructure Program, GrampiansRegional Waste and Yarriambiack Shire Council.
Garage Sale Trail was founded in 2010 byAndrew Valder and Darryl Nichols.
Mr Nichols said the event had grown from strength to strength.
“In 2014therewas 2.9 million pre-loved items from over 8000 garage sales,” he said.
“The average seller made over $300 and met 13 new peopleon the day.
“One garage sale on its own doesn’t make much of a difference, but if every garage in the country gets involved, that’s the makingsof some very positive change.”
