ABBALANCHE will bring the music of ABBA to the Mittagong RSL Club on Sunday, October 25. Photo suppliedLESLEY Watters was seven years old when she received her first ABBA album, ABBA’s Greatest Hits Volume 2.
Gimme Gimme Gimme was on high rotation as she danced her days away and imagined she was Agnetha Faltskog.
Fast forward to the present day and Leslie’s childhood daydream had become a reality – with one small difference.
“It’s a funny story because now I pretend to be Frida Lyngstad,” Leslie said.
“I love being able to play her – she’s the feisty one and she has a lot of heart.”
For the past twenty years, Leslie has toured pubs and clubs with ABBA cover band ABBALANCHE.
She joined the band in 1995 with her husband Peter Watters (who played Bjorn Ulvaeus) and the couple bought the rights to the band in 1996.
The pair met during their university years at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music where Leslie majored in classical voice and Peter studied classical guitar.

“We bumped into each other in the common area and we started to talk,” Leslie said.
“We didn’t bond over ABBA at the time but I converted him later on.”
When Leslie was not on stage, she channelled her passion for music into a different role as a music teacher.
While she had not incorporated ABBA’s music into her lessons, her students had become aware of her dual life through advertisements in the local media and on YouTube.
“When I teach music and performance, the students know I practice what I preach,” Leslie said.
“It’s a lot of fun to pass on what I know.”
This weekend will mark the 20th anniversary of ABBALANCHE and the band will celebrate with a performance at the Mittagong RSL Club.
For those who have wanted to become a dancing queen, the band will crown a member from the audience at the show.
“What we look for in a dancing queen is someone who likes to have fun and who is not too shy,” Leslie said.
“We love to get the crowd involved and we do a lot of sing-a-longs at the shows.”
ABBALANCHE will perform on Saturday, October 24.
The show will run from 7.30pm to 11pm.
Tickets are $25 and can be booked online or through the club.
The Mittagong RSL Club is located at the corner of the Old Hume Highway and Bessemer Street, Mittagong.
