SAFEGUARDING: Wangaratta administrator Rod Roscholler.
Administrators have taken safeguards against Wangaratta’snext set of elected councillors by creating a new law to stop them making ad-hoc decisions.
The local law wasadopted at Tuesday’s meeting and ensures current administrators and futurecouncillorsmust consult the public before making, amending or revoking a major policy.
This includes providing opportunities for affected people to be heard and taking into account submissions.
Administrator Rod Roscholler a similar law exists in Brimbank, which has a council with administrators.
“It includes, as a major council policy, codes of conduct for any incoming councillors and we think that’s probably quite important,” he said.
“I think it’s one that will stand the municipality in good steadin years going forward.”
Chief executive officer Brendan McGrath said breachingthe law could result in fines or a breach of the Local Government Act.
