THE inaugural Colin McPhedran Commemorative Trek will be launched in Moss Vale tomorrow.
The event has been organised by Melbourne’s Michael Clarebrough and Kevin Commins.
The trek will retrace the arduous 450km journey taken by 11-year-old Colin McPhedran and his family through northern Myanmar (Burma) ahead of the Japanese invaders in 1942.
The late Colin McPhedran had strong links to the Southern Highlands.
He settled in Bowral, married Laurel Hales and raised four children while finding time to serve for many years on the Bowral Municipal Council and Bowral Hospital Board.
Funds raised by the Colin McPhedran Commemorative Trek will be distributed to the Burnet Institute for its vital medical research and public health action in Myanmar.
It will also go to the Emmanuels Hospitals Association and Global Development Group to support child and maternal health and HIV in northern Myanmar, the Myitkyina General Hospital and Digboi Hospital in India.
The Highlands launch will include a presentation by the trekkers at the Wingecarribee Council theatrette in Donkin Avenue, Moss Vale, at 2pm.
